At the close of the fourth day’s play, the writing was well and truly on the walls. England had an opportunity to defy the inevitable, however, the task eventually turned out to be insurmountable. The fate of the game was decided on the first day itself, however, persistent rain kept the players and the supporters on their toes to delay England’s defeat in the match.

New Zealand had to pick seven wickets on the final day which wasn’t daunting bearing in mind their performance in the game. England’s second innings was all about their batsmen doing the hard yards and then somehow succumbing to the guile and trajectory of the Kiwis. In the first innings, Boult and Southee made life horrible for the Brits, however, this time around the lone spinner in Todd Astle chipped in with three scalps.

Stokes and Woakes strain, but in vain

David Malan perished to a vicious out-swinger by Tim Southee, which kissed the edge of his willow and nestled into Tom Latham’s webbings. Johny Bairstow strung together a partnership with Ben Stokes but perished to a half-tracker from Astle. Moeen Ali looked pretty until he was pinned by Trent Boult. The left-hander went for a review, but replays agreed with the umpire.

At the fall of the sixth wicket, England were 159 runs behind with four wickets in hand. Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes have emerged as a couple of useful all-rounders for the English and brought forth all their attributes and subsequently staved off the venom spewed by the Kiwis bowlers. Stokes made amends for his eight-ball duck with an uncharacteristic, yet useful 66 runs off 188 balls.

Meanwhile, along with Woakes, he carved a stand worth 83 runs, which nearly saved the visitors of an embarrassment of an innings defeat. However, he was fell prey to Neil Wagner. Meanwhile, Woakes scorched away to a half-century. The last three wickets fell in a hurry as the Kiwis stormed to victory in the inaugural Day/Night Test in New Zealand.
