They were the No.1 ODI team in the world. Heading into the ODI series it was all supposed to go their way. But South Africa lost the services of AB de Villiers for the first three matches due to a finger injury that he suffered in the last Test. The South Africans took the field in the first ODI, skipper Faf du Plessis scored a hundred but the runs they got weren’t enough to even challenge India.
If the defeat wasn’t enough, Faf sustained a finger injury during the match and that didn’t just rule him out of the rest of the ODI series but the T20Is as well. In the middle of the series, they had to appoint a new captain. Considering all the prospects, CSA handed over the responsibility to Aiden Markram.
A much depleted Proteas team faced off against the vibrant Indians in the second match in Centurion and they were thumped. A better balanced, composed and confident unit, Virat Kohli & Co. wasn’t going to let the opportunity slip by. Their wrist spinners were on top of their game and skittled the opposition out for a paltry 118.
During the chase, India were clinical with Shikhar Dhawan leading the charge at the top of the order. He and skipper Kohli batted through. The duo returned back with individual scores of 51 and 46 respectively. India won the match by 9 wickets and gained a 2-0 lead in the series.
Heading into the third match among the million questions the Proteas need to find answers for, will also have to bring in a new keeper in the XI. Quinton de Kock also hurt his fingers in the 2nd ODI while batting and the wicketkeeper-batsman has been ruled out of the rest of the ODI series and the T20Is that will follow.
Skipper Markram’s list of troubles is just getting longer as he will now have to field a much-inexperienced line-up against India who have already tasted blood and will want to impose another win in Cape Town to take a 3-0 lead in the series.

Dear @jacqueskallis75 given the injuries plaguing Proteas team – ABD, Faf and now Quinton de Kock, maybe you need to come out of retirement to fuel some fire in the #INDvsSA series.
And while I'm being wishful, how about @JontyRhodes8 too 🙂
