England’s tour of South Africa began with a brilliant day of Test cricket. In a hard-fought day, both teams tried hard to gain the upper hand. But neither of them could do the same. Even though England seemed to be on the top halfway through this day, Quinton de Kock’s fightback put the Proteas back in contention and thus they managed to get to a decent score.

The Brits won an excellent toss on Day-1 of this Test and chose to bowl. It wasn’t easy to bat on the first day. Furthermore, in his landmark 150th Test, James Anderson struck off the first ball that he bowled. Dean Elgar flirted with a delivery bowled down the leg side but couldn’t get enough bat on it. Thus, the ball landed straight into the hands of the keeper. The other batsmen also got to starts but none of them couldn’t get big scores.

Aiden Markram scored 20 runs while Zubayr Hamza and Faf du Plessis 39 and 29 runs each. Rassie van der Dussen also couldn’t get a big score and was dismissed by Sam Curran for 6 runs. At 111/5, South Africa seemed to be in all sorts of trouble before Quinton de Kock came to the rescue.

Quinton de Kock falls agonisingly short of a ton

Quinton de Kock led the fightback with a counterattacking knock. He put the pressure back on the opposition with his 95. However, it was disappointing to see the wicket-keeper batsman not getting a hundred as Sam Curran struck with a great delivery. South Africa finished the day with a score of 277/9 in 82.4 overs. Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets on the day and will hope to get his fifth on the second day. Stuart Broad picked up three wickets while Jofra Archer and James Anderson accounted for one scalp each.

Fans of both the teams were impressed with the performances from their respective teams. They were thrilled to see Sam Curran do so well when most of his teammates found it tough. Some of them were also disappointed that Quinton de Kock couldn’t get another five runs.
