Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja picked his fifth five – wicket haul of his career to trigger a New Zealand collapse on the day three of the ongoing first Test at the Green Park Stadium, Kanpur.

After a steady response to India’s first innings total of 318, the Kiwis looked well set to overhaul the total and gain a healthy lead over the hosts when they ended at 152/1 on day two before rain forced an early end to the day’s play.

However, things became really awry for the New Zealanders as the spinning duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja produced a wonderful bowling display to wrap up the Kiwis’ innings way before that anticipated.

It was Ashwin who began the wicket taking procession with the wicket of overnight batter Tom Latham. Jadeja got into action and began snapping wickets adding Luke Ronchi and Ross Taylor in his tally, triggering the downfall.

The fall of wicket continued. Ashwin added another wicket to his credit in the form of Mitchell Santner. However, the knockout blow was delivered after two overs later, Jadeja bowled a three-wicket over. Mark Craig and Ish Sodhi, both trapped LBW, departed off back to back deliveries to put Jadeja on a hat-trick. Boult, however, denied the left armer the milestone. However, Jadeja didn’t mind and made up for that by snapping his off the next delivery to make it three wickets in four balls.

Ashwin pulled the curtains down on the Black Caps innings with the wicket of the BJ Watling. The visitors would be really unhappy with this show today, crumbling down from 152/1 to 262 all out. This slump in the batting fortunes also saw India take an important 56 run lead.
