Auckland – T20I – New Zealand vs Australia – a run feast – highest chase – massive sixes; this was the story of the 5th 20I of the Trans-Tasman Tri Series. Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bat first. Ideally, it is considered a good strategy to bat second since teams prefer to know the target at a high-scoring venue. They posted a humongous 243 runs on the board but Australia bettered it with 5 wickets and 7 balls to spare.
A big score from Martin Guptill was overdue and he materialized it big time tonight. He hammered the Australian bowlers on the way to his 2nd T20I hundred. The opener took just 49 balls to touch triple figures and went berserk hitting six boundaries and nine sixes in his knock. Colin Munro bettered him in terms of strike rate scoring his runs at 230. He played just 33 balls and added 76 runs to the total while Guptill was eventually dismissed on 105 from 54.
The others couldn’t quite capitalize on the kind of start they had and though New Zealand managed 243/6 with a run rate of 12.15 they still looked 20 odd runs short of a winning total.
With David Warner and D’Arcy Short at the top of the batting Australia weren’t quite worried. What also worked in their favour was the fact that they knew the ask. They started off with such intent that no total was ever going to be enough. Ish Sodhi did get his team a breakthrough dismissing Warner for 24-ball 59 but that didn’t do them any good.
Short continued to hit them hard and big. He scored 76 from 44 balls while Glenn Maxwell with a 14-ball 31 and Aaron Finch’s unbeaten 14-ball 36 took them home with half the wickets still intact. This is now the highest successful run-chase in both T20Is and in the format overall.

Restricting the size of players bats was never going to work. Which should've been obvious. These guys are so good at hitting these days you MUST give something to the bowlers via the pitch! #lunatics #asylum
