India A and England Lions locked horns in the final of the tri-series on Monday at the Kennington Oval in London. The visitors continued their winning runs beautifully and managed to defeat their opponents to win the series courtesy of the stunning and equally calm knock from Rishabh Pant. The youngster kept his nerves with the wickets falling at the other end and took Krunal Pandya along with him to seal the deal for his team as they registered a victory by 5 wickets.
Chasing the total of 265 runs, Prithvi Shaw was sent back by Matthew Fisher in the seventh over but his partner Mayank Agarwal kept on playing attractive shots. Shubman Gill displayed his prowess for a brief period of time but the brilliance of Liam Dawson cut-short his stay in the middle on 20. Soon the same bowler pinned Agarwal in front of the stumps to make things interesting at 83/3 in the 16th over.
The skipper Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari then resurrected the innings carefully with a 67-run stand but both of them were guilty of throwing away their wickets at the wrong time. At 196/5 in the 39th over, the game was well in the balance even as Pant was struggling to middle the ball which left the fans of the visitors nervous. But the youngster didn’t throw his wicket and worked hard for his runs.
He got an able partner in Krunal Pandya who has received a maiden call-up to the national T20I side for the series against England. The left-hander proved his all-round prowess as he supported Pant wonderfully and stitched a calm and unbeaten partnership of 71 runs to win the title for the team.
Hain drives the Lions
Earlier in the day after losing the toss, England Lions got off to the worst possible start with both their openers back in the hut by the 9th over. But then came an exhibition of delightful strokes thanks to Sam Hain and Liam Livingstone as they added 152 runs together. Pandya managed to break the stand by scalping a big wicket of the latter who was looking to up the ante. The wicket helped India A apply brakes on the run-scoring as the wickets kept falling at the other end.
But Hain fought bravely and notched up a century to eventually score 108 runs off just 122 deliveries. Unfortunately, though, he wasn’t supported by anyone else courtesy some exceptional pace bowling from the Men in Blue. They didn’t get the final kick to the innings and were restricted to 264 runs for the loss of 9 wickets after 50 overs. Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and Khaleel Ahmed shared 7 wickets between them and impressed many with their skills.
As it turned out, Lions had to pay for not putting enough runs on the board. India A gunned down the tricky total thanks to Pant and Pandya and managed to win the closely fought tri-series.
