Continuing his red-hot form with the bat in Tests, Rishabh Pant, on Friday, put India in a strong position with a sublime century against England in the ongoing fourth Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Pant, who has a Test century in Australia and England, scored a ton at home for the first time in his career.

India were in all sorts of trouble when he joined Rohit Sharma in the middle at the start of the second session. The hosts were reeling at 80 for 4 at that stage after losing the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the very first session of the day. England were well on top at that stage.

Rohit and Pant steadied the ship but before they could bail India out of trouble, England struck. Ben Stokes dismissed the former with a stunning delivery to leave the hosts reeling at 121 for 5. Ravichandran Ashwin could not do much either as it looked like India might not even touch the 200-run mark in reply to England’s first innings total of 205.

Rishabh Pant rescues India with stunning ton:

With India reeling at 146 for 6 after Ashwin’s departure, England were firmly in the driver’s seat. But before the visitors could make more inroads in the game, Pant took charge of the innings. The wicketkeeper-batsman found an able partner in Washington Sundar. The duo helped India overtake England’s total and took the score past the 250-run mark.

Pant hit a four off James Anderson in the 83rd over to help India cross the mark and in the very next over, he hit Joe Root for a six to reach his century. The Delhi star’s century came off just 115 balls and was studded with 13 fours and two sixes. Pant, however, did not last long after his century and was dismissed by Anderson for 101. But his knock has put India in a strong position in the crucial fourth Test.

Among all the brilliant shots he played, the reverse sweep over the first slip off Anderson left many in his awe, But most importantly, Pant has given India a chance to boss this game from here even as the pitch continues to deteriorate.
