Sean Abbott showcased his all-round blitzes as Sydney Sixers clinched yet another thriller in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22. The defending champions upset Adelaide Strikers in their latest assignment, chasing 148 with four balls to spare. It was indeed a thrilling game as momentum rode on a roller coaster. However, the Moises Henriques-led side emerged as a better team eventually.

Earlier in the game, Adelaide Strikers won the toss and opted to bat at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Strikers failed to make a substantial start as openers Jake Weatherald and Matthew Short were dismissed inside the powerplay overs. While Matt Renshaw and Jonathan Wells did get steady starts, none of the two could play an impact knock. Notably, the track had some assistance for the fast bowlers.

Meanwhile, Thomas Kelly was Adelaide’s stand-out performer with the bat as he slammed 41 off just 31 balls to keep his side in the hunt. However, the lower order couldn’t come to the party as the Strikers were could only manage 147/8 in their allotted 20 overs. All-rounders Sean Abbott and Daniel Christian made the ball talk for the Sixers and took three wickets apiece.

With a paltry-looking total on the board, the defending champions made a steady start with openers Josh Philippe and James Vince adding 44 runs for the first wicket. However, tables turned when the latter fell prey to left-arm spinner Fawad Ahmed in the seventh over. Philippe, the highest run-scorer of the season, could only manage 23 as the Strikers gained command.

A match to remember for Sean Abbott

While skipper Moises Henriques made a steady 29, the likes of Daniel Hughes and Daniel Christian failed to make their bat talk as the Peter Siddle-led side was right back in the hunt. Jordan Silk then led the fightback for the Sixers as he played some delightful shots all over the park. Just when the Sixers looked on command, Silk got out in the penultimate over to make the contest even more thrilling.

The Sixers eventually crossed the line in 19.2 overs with Sean Abbott and Hayden Kerr contributing with the required late impetus. With four wins in five outings, Sixers are now leading the team standings with the Strikers are still are still at the fifth place, having won just one of their four games.
