Pakistan would feel that they got out of jail in their opening T20I against Bangladesh on Friday, November 19 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. In a low-scoring affair, the hosts gave the Men in Green a run for their money. But in the end, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz’s unbeaten 36-run partnership helped the visiting team chase down the target of 128 runs with four balls to spare.
Afif, Nurul, Mahedi guide Bangladesh
After opting to bat first, the Tigers found themselves in all sorts of strife, being reduced to 15 for three in 4.4 overs. Even as Mohammad Wasim Jr. got rid of Saif Hassan and Najmul Hossain Shanto, Hasan Ali accounted for Mohammad Naim’s wicket. Mahmudullah couldn’t last long as Nawaz rattled his woodwork. However, Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan injected momentum into the innings.
Afif smashed two fours and as many sixes on his way to a 34-ball 36. Nurul also chipped in with a handy 22-ball 28, lacked with two hits over the ropes. In the end, it was Mahedi Hasan’s 20-ball 30 at a strike rate of 150 that propelled the Tigers to 127 in their 20 overs. Taskin Ahmed also smacked Haris Rauf for a huge six. Hasan Ali was the most successful among the bowlers with three wickets.
Pakistan get past the finishing line
Pakistan made a terrible start to their run-chase as they managed only 24 runs in the powerplay and lost four wickets. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, the two leading T20I run-scorers in 2021, couldn’t make an impact. Haider Ali and Shoaib Malik failed to open their accounts. From there on, Fakhar Zaman and Khushdil Shah steadied the ship for Pakistan with a handy partnership of 56 runs.
Both batters scored 34 before pacers Taskin and Shoriful Islam nipped them out. The hosts got the visitors by the scruff of their necks as Pakistan needed 31 off their last three overs to win. But Shadab and Nawaz made sure that their team didn’t stumble at the finishing line. Even as Shadab stayed not out on 21 off 10, Nawaz stayed unbeaten on an eight-ball 18 with one four and two sixes.

#PakvsBan Was a tough pitch to chase, and Pak’s batting got tested today. Lot easier to see off tough moments when you have wins behind you. Confidence is a great friend to have but it befriends you only if you are winning! Good job Pakistan.#PakistanZindabad
