The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost two matches in a row in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). However, MS Dhoni’s men made a stupendous comeback with a six-wicket victory against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With the triumph, CSK also became the first team to qualify for the playoffs. SRH remained in the fourth position.

Pandey takes responsibility

It wasn’t a surprise that the Super Kings won the toss and elected to field first. However, the visitors racked up a substantial score of 175 for three in 20 overs. Harbhajan Singh, making a comeback, got rid of Jonny Bairstow in his first over. Thereafter, David Warner and Manish Pandey put on a partnership of 115 runs off 12 overs. Warner turned up his yet another half-century and he got it in 39 deliveries.

He became Harbhajan’s second victim in the 14th over. At the other end, Pandey, who came in place of Kane Williamson, stacked up a fifty off 25 balls. He didn’t stop thereafter and remained not out on 83 off 49 with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes. Vijay Shankar also came in and turned up with a quickfire 26 from 20 balls. Deepak Chahar got rid of him in the last ball of the penultimate over.

Watson goes berserk

CSK’s run-chase didn’t start off well as Deepak Hooda sent Faf du Plessis with a direct-hit from mid-off. Suresh Raina and Shane Watson took charge and injected momentum in the Super Kings’ innings with a stand of 77 runs off 45 balls. Their attacking approach literally put the hosts on the driver’s seat. Raina bagged a duck in the last match, but today, he was in a different zone with a quick 38 from 24 balls.

The southpaw was stumped on 38 runs from 24 off the bowling of Rashid Khan. At that point in time, the Super Kings required 96 runs off the last 10 overs. Meanwhile, Watson raced off to his maiden half-century in 35 balls. The Queenslander didn’t slow down and got to 96 after which he was caught down the leg-side. The game went down to the last over and with nine runs off it and CSK reached home with one ball to spare.

Here is how Twitter reacted to CSK’s triumph
