The Test series between India and Sri Lanka kicked off at the Galle International Stadium with India purely dominating Day 1 of the first test. India piled up 400 runs (well almost) on the first day.
Earlier in the day, it was Captain Virat Kohli who won the toss as India elected to bat first. India went in with all rounder Hardik Pandya instead of Kuldeep Yadav. Rohit Sharma was ignored. As of Sri Lanka, they dropped Suranga Lakmal.
In absence of regular openers Murali Vijay and KL Rahul, it was Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund who walked out to bat. While Mukund got to play one game against Australia, Dhawan played his first test match in almost a year owing to his significant form in the recent past.
While Mukund couldn’t make use of the opportunity, it was Dhawan who unleashed his lethal mode. He batted with a splendid demeanour as the Sri Lankan bowlers seemed clueless in front of him. He went on to slam his fifth century in tests as the dressing room erupted into cheers for him.
Not only did he bat brilliantly, but he also made a meal out of the bowlers. He scored runs at a quick pace. Batting with a sublime strike rate of 113.1, he smashed 190 runs from just 168 balls. However, he lost out on a well deserving double century as Angelo Mathews held on to one at mid off.
If you think that was enough torture for the Sri Lankan bowlers, you’re absolutely wrong. Probably India’s best test batsman had something more to offer after a great last season. Cheteshwar Pujara made way to a scintillating century too with some fantastic batting. This was his 12th century in Tests.
India ended the day at 399/3 with Pujara batting on 144 while Ajinkya Rahane on 39, providing ample support from the other end. No wonder the day completely belonged to India even though Sri Lanka had their moments. Nuwan Pradeep took all the 3 wickets while the rest of the Sri Lankan bowlers toiled hard on the field.

The bouncer that affected Kohli for a while in the West Indies continues to haunt him here…….

Virat Kohli's rough patch in Tests continues. Just 49 runs in his last six innings at average 8.16. Highest: 15 vs Australia. #SLvInd

Umpire says out. No MCBCs from Kohli which is a conclusive evidence that he knicked it.

Kohli turning out be Pradeep's bunny ?#SLvIND

Kohli getting out to short balls is becoming too frequent. Not too glaring tho, knowing him, he's on it already to remove the chunks.

Mr. Kohli. Sort yourself out before England once again comes back to haunt you. As a starting point, shed some weight off that head!#kohli

Terrible shot attempt from Kohli to get out early. Many weaknesses for him in test cricket. Every day bowlers exploiting him. #SLvIND

After Dhawan's fireworks,Pujara's composure has ensured Sri Lanka cannot win. The longer India bat,the more the spinners will enjoy bowling.

Small time pleasures: Having your evening tea and watching Rahane & Pujara bat together in a test match.

Kohli has to move down and get Rahane in at 4

INSIDE STORY: Shastri said he used "ICC #INDvSL series" instead of "INDvSL series" in the team meeting. That might have helped Dhawan. Wow!

The Indians are constantly charging down the wicket against Herath. So the plan against the spinner remains the same from 2yrs ago. #SLvIND
