It was a day when the bowlers reigned supreme. A total of 16 wickets fell on the first day, and the Sri Lankan side already finds itself starring down the barrel in Bangalore.

The visitors ended the first day with their scorecard reading 86/6, and still trail the Indian total by 166 runs. Sri Lanka lost their first wicket with just two runs on the board, as Kusal Mendis edged Jasprit Bumrah straight to Shreyas Iyer in the slip cordon. The next man to depart was Lahiru Thirimanne.

The left-hander edged a delivery that pitched outside off stump and left him, and once again, it was Iyer who pouched the offering. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne was then cleaned up by Mohammed Shami to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 14/3.

Dhananjaya De Silva was then snaffled by Shami and walked back for just 10. Charith Asalanka then hit Axar Patel straight to Ashwin at mid-off as Sri Lanka lost half their side with just 50 runs on the board. And, in the closing moments of the day, Angelo Mathews edged Bumrah to the slip cordon, where skipper Rohit Sharma took a sharp catch.

Shreyas Iyer’s enterprising 92 propels India past the 250-run mark

India started their innings in poor fashion, as Mayank Agarwal set off for a non-existential run and was run out for four as India lost their first wicket with just 10 runs on the board. Skipper Rohit Sharma was the next man to depart, as he edged Lasith Embuldeniya to the slip cordon and walked back for 15.

Batting legend Virat Kohli walked in to a rousing reception from the Bangalore crowd. The right-hander scored a couple of boundaries in his 48-ball stay but was removed by Dhananjaya De Silva. Kohli was caught plumb in front of the stumps by the off-spinner for 23.

Rishabh Pant shone brightly in his brief 26-ball stay and scored a whirlwind 39 at a strike rate of 150. But then, Pant went for a cut shot and was cleaned up by Embuldeniya. And then, came that assault from Shreyas Iyer that dazzled the crowd in Bangalore.

Iyer took the attack to the opposition and scored a stroke-filled 98-ball 92. His innings was filled with 10 fours and four sixes, and the right-hander played a pivotal role in helping India cross the 250-run mark. One of the highlights of Iyer’s innings was a massive six that he struck off the bowling of Dhananjaya De Silva that sailed out of Chinnaswamy.

But then, the Indian batters did not support Iyer. Wickets fell at regular intervals, as India were bowled out for a total of 252, with Iyer the final batter to be dismissed.
