On Day 2, the Proteas resumed from their overnight score of 298/1. In the first session, Hashim Amla went on to complete his hundred. It was his 27th century as he equalled Graeme Smith as the second highest centurion in Test matches for South Africa. Jacques Kallis stands at the top with 45 centuries.
Both Dean Elgar and Amla continued to bat throughout the first session as the hosts didn’t lose a single wicket. They scored 113 runs in the first session with a total of 411 runs at the board. The Bangladesh bowlers toiled hard on the field as the crowd at Potchefstroom witnessed a spectacular batting performance by the home side.
The second session began with Hashim Amla falling short of 150. However, more drama was to unfold as some overs later, Dean Elgar was dismissed for 199 runs caught by Mominul Haque. The stadium was shell-shocked as all were geared up to watch Elgar score a double century.
Temba Bavuma and Faf du Plessis batted for a while before the Proteas decided they had enough on the board and declared on 496/3. Mustafizur Rahman and Shafiul Islam were the only wicket-takers from the visiting side. Bangladesh didn’t have a great start as they lost both their openers early. Imrul Kayes was dismissed cheaply by Rabada. Liton Das looked good for a while before he found Amla at first slip trying to play outside off. Morne Morkel got his first wicket of the game.
Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim tried to rescue Bangladesh from the early slump. For a moment, it seemed Bangladesh had done well but Makram took a wonderful catch to get rid of skipper Rahim. At stumps on Day 2, Bangladesh were 127/3 with Tamim Iqbal and Mominul at the crease.
