Earlier in the day, it was captain Glenn Maxwell who won the toss as Kings XI Punjab elected to field first. Mohammed Nabi got his maiden IPL cap and became the second Afghanistan player to do so as he was brought into the SRH XI. The Kings XI Punjab had 4 foreign batsmen in their playing XI.
The Sun Risers Hyderabad openers were off to a slow start before Dhawan was back to the pavilion. Just when it seemed SRH were looking to settle, Axar Patel got consecutive wickets of Moises Henriques and Yuvraj Singh as they were reduced to 50/3.
From there on, David Warner and Naman Ojha put up a sensational 60 run partnership. While Warner played the role of an anchor, Naman was given the license to play his shots. He went on to score 34(20) before being stumped by Saha.
Warner accelerated gears as he went on to score an astounding 70 runs from 54 balls. Rashid Khan’s six off the last ball propelled SRH’s total to a challenging 159/6 in their quota of 20 overs. Mohit Sharma bowled exceptionally well and got a couple of wickets. Axar Patel also got two wickets but was a touch expensive. Ishant Sharma was surprisingly economical.
The Kings XI Punjab struggled to put up a bold face while chasing. Hashim Amla got out on the very first ball while Glenn Maxwell was also done for by the third over. The likes of Eoin Morgan, David Miller and Wriddhiman Saha failed to make any difference as Kings XI Punjab were reduced to 62/5.
However, there was one man who never gave up. The talented Manan Vohra gave a glimpse of what impact he can create. Playing the lone hand for Punjab, the opener smashed 95 runs from just 50 balls in an innings where the second best score was 13.
At the end, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s excellent bowling helped SRH steal a nervy victory. The Kings XI Punjab fell short by five runs as Ishant Sharma was bowled by Siddharth Kaul in the last over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar for his five-wicket haul was deservingly awarded the man of the match.
Here are some of the amazing Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game.
