The first qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was played at the Chepauk which is meant to be a fortress for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). But not against Mumbai Indians (MI). The Rohit Sharma-led side was unbeaten at the venue since 2010 and the record continued even today. They played superbly to defy the Men in Yellow and Suryakumar Yadav was the hero for the visitors.

Chasing the tricky total of 132 runs on a turning surface, MI got off to a worst possible start. Rohit Sharma couldn’t read the away swinger which pitched on the leg-stump and was caught plumb in front of the stumps off Deepak Chahar off the second delivery itself. Quinton de Kock then was trapped superbly by Harbhajan Singh and at 21/2, things looked tough.

This is where Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav got together and turned the game completely. Not to forget, Murali Vijay dropped the latter when he was on 11 and the same batsman paved the way for Mumbai’s victory by remaining unbeaten on 71 off 54 balls. He was supported well by Ishan Kishan who scored 28 runs and the 80-run association was broken by Imran Tahir. The leggie sent back Krunal Pandya for a golden duck but it was too little too late for CSK as their nemesis chased down the target in the penultimate over.

CSK recover to post a fighting total

Earlier, CSK were jolted early with Faf du Plessis getting out to Rahul Chahar while Suresh Raina was sent back soon by Jayant Yadav. Shane Watson looked decent for a brief while only for the left-arm Krunal Pandya to get better of him. The pitch was turning too much and a lot was happening in the middle. At 32/3, CSK were in all sorts of trouble.

But the duo of Murali Vijay and Ambati Rayudu calmed things down with a sensible play. They added 33 runs for the fourth wicket and the former was foxed once again by Chahar with a beautiful delivery. MS Dhoni walked out to bat in the middle and soon took the attack to Yadav by hitting him for a six.

Rayudu also got into his elements as the partnership flourished at a much-needed pace. Dhoni tonked a couple of back-to-back sixes off Lasith Malinga in the 19th over to raise the hopes in the CSK camp. But an exceptional last over by Jasprit Bumrah made sure that the Men in Yellow didn’t go past 140. CSK finished at 131 runs for the loss of four wickets as Rayudu-Dhoni duo added an unbeaten stand of 66 runs in the last 7.5 overs.

Though the score eventually didn’t prove to be enough as Suryakumar Yadav played a brilliant knock for MI to take them into the finals.
