Sydney Sixers have got better of the Thunder in a rain-marred derby in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL).  They have also qualified for the semi-finals of this season with this being their eight win and secured the second position in the points table with one more game to go. The Thunder, on the other hand have made things tough for themselves and are stranded at the fifth place. Their loss has also opened the doors for the defending champions Adelaide Strikers.

Coming back to the game, the Thunder, after being invited to bat first, never got going. Four of their top five batsmen crossed the 20-run mark but none of them could pace the innings well and were tied up nicely by some disciplined bowling effort. While the skipper Shane Watson scored 28, Callum Ferguson and and Anton Devcich mustered 26 and 22 runs respectively.

Chris Green looked solid with his unbeaten 34 off jut 22 deliveries but didn’t get enough from the other end on a slow wicket at the SCG. Eventually, they only managed to muster 128 runs for the loss of six wickets after 20 overs. The Sixers were well aware of the pitch behaviour and all the five bowlers were economical during their four-over spells.

Vince and Hughes seal the chase amidst rain break

The chase for the Sixers began after a brief rain break which reduced the game to 19 overs and the target was adjusted to 124. They got off to horrendous start as Josh Phillipe was involved in a mix-up with his partner Daniel Hughes off the very first ball of the innings. But then the duo of Hughes and James Vince accumulated runs with utter ease.

But the heavens opened up again to reduce the target to 84 off 12 overs. This change didn’t deter the batsmen in the middle as they had got off to a good start. Both of them continued to bat the way they were doing before the break and on the game for the team in the 11th over itself. While Vince remained not out on 43, Hughes scored 41.
