Sparkling half-centuries from skipper Gautam Gambhir (76*) and Chris Lynn (93*) handed Gujarat Lions a battering as they were defeated by 10 wickets. Both openers were in the mood and attacked the thin bowling attack of the Lions right from the word go and got home in a canter with 31 balls to spare.

Lynn was the aggressor initially when he launched an attack on new ball bowler Dhawal Kulkarni followed by MS Gony. Gambhir followed suit and got stuck into chinaman bowler Kaushik. Raina took a brave call by asking the youngster to bowl two overs during the fielding restrictions. Both openers were experienced enough to target the bowler and took 25 runs off his 2 overs.

It was a night of records for KKR. First, they recorded the highest opening stand in the history of the IPL, going past the previous record of 167 runs between Gayle and Dilshan in 2013. Then they got home without losing a wicket which became the highest total chased down with all ten wickets intact in all T20 cricket.

Earlier in the night, Suresh Raina lived a charmed life to get to a half-century, his 29th of the IPL, and in the process overtook Virat Kohli to become the highest scorer in the tournament’s history. He was dropped twice – once by Kuldeep Yadav, which was a tough chance at mid-on then by Yusuf Pathan, in a fairly easy chance at deep square leg. Raina’s 68* was divided into three phases. A good start as he got to 21 quickly off just 13 balls; he then lost his rhythm in the middle as he struggled to hit boundaries. His innings ended with a little flourish at the end as he finished with 15 runs off the last 7 balls he faced.

While Raina was struggling, Dinesh Karthik played some breathtaking strokes. He hit as many as 6 boundaries and 2 maximums in an enterprising 25-ball 47. He carried his domestic form into this game and looked in control from ball one. It was his and Raina’s partnership of 87 which helped Gujarat Lions to get to 183/4. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for KKR, finishing with 2/25. Chris Woakes and Trent Boult – who saved 4 runs with a gravity-defying save at the boundary – had an ordinary debut for KKR giving away 75 runs in 7 overs between themselves for just the solitary wicket.

In the end, 184 seemed like a walk in the park for KKR. Gujarat’s bowling lacked in quality and experience and was taken to the cleaners by Lynn and Gambhir.

Such an ordinary performance is going to hurt the Gujarat Lions but they need to put it behind it as it is still early days in the tournament.
