Twitter Reactions: Twitter takes potshots at Parthiv Patel on his callup

The Indian team suffered quite a blow ahead of the Asia Cup T20 2016 today as skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni suffered muscle spasm while training today at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah on the outskirts of Dhaka. Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel was called in as a back-up for Dhoni just in case he doesn’t recover in time for the tournament.

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur in a press statement announced it stating: “India ODI and T20I captain MS Dhoni has suffered a muscle spasm in the back during a training session today in Dhaka,”

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Parthiv Patel as the back-up wicketkeeper for the upcoming Asia Cup, 2016. He will join the team in Dhaka at the earliest.”

Twitter was instantly buzzing with tweets on Parthiv’s selection and Dhoni’s injury. Though the selectors showed enough faith on Patel, the social media certainly wasn’t impressed and started comparing the two players and magnifying the difference. Someone said Patel in for Dhoni is like half the replacement while another quipped that after Nehra’s comeback the selectors are probably giving all his 2002 teammates a chance.

But looking at the current scenario in domestic cricket and form others like Dinesh Kartik or even Sanju Samson and Naman Ojha haven’t done as good as Patel in the shortest format and that is what must have pushed the selectors to call him up as cover for the skipper.

Parthiv in the last one year has played 27 T20 innings and posted 760 runs, he has maintained an of average 31.67. He also has an impressive strike rate of 148.15.
