Virat Kohli has been the epitome of class and batting this year. He walked into the year with a lot of expectations and unfulfilled desires and as the year progressed he concurred one after the other. Be it the first T20 hundred or the first Test double hundred, Virat has earned it all this year. Today at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai he scored the third double century of his Test career and all three have come in the ongoing year.
He walked into bat at a crucial time when Cheteshwar Pujara got out early on the second morning though the third wicket pair of Murali Vijay and Pujara had built a platform but there was still a lot to be done. After England posted 400 in the first inning, the Indian team had to bat really well to get somewhere close to it with the surface assisting spinners. Virat and the partnerships he stitched with Vijay, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav ensured they not only overhauled the total but have a lead of over 170 runs.
Virat, in particular, has been exceptional, he gave a couple of chances but England couldn’t make the most of it and he has made them pay for it big time. After scoring his 15th Test century yesterday he remained unbeaten at the end of the day and walked out to bat with sublime intent today. The intention was clear he and Jayant wanted to ensure they have a lead where they no longer need to bat again. His partner batted well and that has also helped Virat play his game.
The Wankhede crowd had their phones and camera’s out in readiness to witness the moment and he flicked Adil Rashid through midwicket for a single and the almost full house erupted to celebrate it with the Indian skipper. This is his third Test double and is the only Indian skipper to do so. He has added 215 runs with Jayant already and the team leads by 179 runs. Virat went into lunch unbeaten on 212 while his partner the rookie allrounder I might say is 92 not out.
