The vice-captain of the Indian team, Ajinkya Rahane turned 33 on June 6 (Sunday) and wishes poured in from all quarters. Having been one of the most crucial cogs in the Indian team for over half a decade now, Rahane is prepping for one of the biggest challenges in his Test career, with India in line to face New Zealand at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton, from June 18-22 for the World Test Championship final.
Wishing the birthday lad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India posted a video of Rahane’s gritty 115-run knock against South Africa in 2019. “Here’s wishing @ajinkyarahane88 – #TeamIndia’s Test vice-captain – a very happy birthday,” read BCCI’s caption. His IPL franchise also joined in: “A perfectly timed birthday wish for Jinks, just like any of his classy shots. Happy Birthday @ajinkyarahane88”, wrote Delhi Capitals.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli took to his Instagram and Twitter accounts to wish his compatriot, as he wrote, “Happy birthday jinks. Lots of peace, happiness to you and many more memorable partnerships with you.”
Rahane played a crucial role in India’s historic triumph Down Under in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21, which India won 2-1 notwithstanding the absence of a pile of first-choice cricketers due to a combination of personal reasons and injuries. In Virat Kohli’s absence – the Indian skipper was granted paternity leave – Ajinkya Rahane led an inspired unit of youngsters to a memorable victory in Melbourne immediately after a historic and horrific loss at Adelaide.
Following the series-levelling victory was the great escape at Sydney, when India was bailed out of trouble by, amongst other contributions, Ravichandran Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari, before a further bruised unit breached the Gabbatoir, handing Australia their first defeat at the venue in 32 years, to win the series 2-1 under Rahane.
Having represented the nation in 73 Tests, the right-handed batter has amassed 4583 runs at an impressive 41.29 with 12 centuries and 23 half-centuries to his credit. In the limited-overs formats, Rahane has represented India in 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is, scoring 2692 and 375 runs respectively. Albeit a small sample size, he has led India to four wins in five Tests as captain, while India has won all three ODIs under Rahane’s leadership.
Here is how social media celebrated Ajinkya Rahane’s birthday:
