Australia posted a massive total in the first innings, thanks to special innings of Steve Smith. The team from down under put on 451 as the Australian skipper ran out of batsmen to partner him. In reply, India started strongly with Vijay and KL Rahul guided their team past fifty run mark. Pujara and Vijay then added over a hundred runs before the latter was stumped by O’Keefe.
Indians then kept on losing a wicket for every 30 or 40 runs scored with captain returning adding only six to the total. India were still 123 runs behind when Saha walked into bat accompanying a very patient Pujara. It looked like India would again concede a lead of 80 odd runs in the first innings but that wasn’t the case.
Saha partnered by Pujara played an extraordinary inning. The wicketkeeper stuck in there and was patient enough to keep his wicket until the end of Day Three. Today was even better for Saha as he went on to score his third Test hundred. His innings helped India get past the huge total of Australia. This was a much needed century for Saha as his batting performances were not up to the mark.
He was involved in a record-breaking partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara. This pair webbed a 199 run partnership and Saha was a major contributor in the same. He scored 117 runs and faced 233 deliveries for his 117. The Bengal-lad hit Nathon Lyon for a huge six and his eight boundaries were scattered over those 200 odd deliveries.
Saha also had to face the sledge-hammer from the Australians but that did not affect the 32-year-old. This partnership was the best eighth wicket partnership for India. He had not performed so well in the first two test matches of the series and no one saw this coming.
This is no doubt his best innings in Test cricket and Twitter went wild after Saha reached his century. Here are some of the best tweets which hailed Saha for his battling innings.
