The first Test match between Zimbabwe and West Indies kicked off at the Queens Sports Club at Bulawayo. The crowd witnessed the home team produce a sensational performance as they played their first test against the West Indies since 2013.
Earlier in the day, it was skipper Jason Holder who won the toss as the West Indies elected to bat first. They included Kemar Roach and Kieran Powell in their playing XI. On the other hand, Soloman Mire made his test debut for Zimbabwe.
Batting first, West Indies lost their first wicket in the form of Kraigg Brathwaite. Kyle Hope was also dismissed cheaply leaving the Windies reeling at 35/2. That’s when Kieran Powell and Shai Hope combined for a solid 75 run partnership for the third wicket. Powell soon got out after striking a half century.
Shai Hope continued to bat splendidly as he and Roston Chase added 64 runs for the fourth wicket. However, once Chase was back to the pavilion, there was a flurry of wickets as the Windies lower order collapsed like a pack of cards. In not time, the scoreboard of the visitors swung from 174/3 to 219 all out.
Shai Hope was left stranded at 90 not out as he batted stupendously from one end. However, the wickets kept falling from the other end as the likes of Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich and Jason Holder failed to make any difference. In fact the last three batsmen were dismissed for none.
Skipper Graeme Cremer was amongst the pick of the Zimbabwean bowlers as he got four wickets. Sean Williams also recorded his best figures with 3/20. Kyle Jarvis, Sikandar Raza and debutant Solomon Mire also managed to get a wicket each. Zimbabwe were 19/0 at stumps on Day 1 as they trailed by 200 runs. The home fans were glad to have Brendan Taylor back in the mix.

If the speedgun is to be believed, Mpofu is well ahead of Jarvis on pace. The Magwegwe Express … #ZimvWI

The Jarvis that Zimbabwe lost in 2013 bowled a four-ball every over. Jarvis so far today: 6-2-16-1. Mpofu's control equally good #ZimvWI
