Popular Cricket commentator and analyst, Rameez Raza recently questioned about MS Dhoni being awarded the Grade ‘A’ contract, simply by following the Superstar Syndrome and not giving importance to the greatest format of the game. Raja complained about the trend which is prevalent only in the sub-continent, but Twitter showed no mercy to the former Pakistani player as they shred him apart with their respective tweets.

This was the very reason why the Ramachandra Guha, the former member of the Supreme Court-appointed CoA (Committee of Administrators), resigned from his position citing the Superstar Culture prevalent in Indian Cricket and various other loopholes and irregularity regarding contracts of the stalwarts of the game pertaining to conflict of interest.

Raja provided the example of Shahid Afridi from Pakistan, who carried a Grade ‘A’ contract even though he retired from one format of the game. Raja’s advice to the board was to prioritize Test cricket and not the icons in the teams.

“You have to acknowledge and respect the status of Test match cricket and it has to come from the cricket boards, in Asia specifically. For example, MSD retired from Test cricket yet got the A-grade contract from the BCCI, Shahid Afridi retired from Test cricket yet got the A-grade contract from PCB,” said the former Pakistan cricketer.

“It is under a lot of stress in Asia but if we have a properly planned Test match championship, that’s the way out of this, otherwise we will be struggling to put aside as much money as is available for the T20 leagues,” further augmented the 54-year old.

“Unfortunately, the superstar syndrome has distorted the system of Indian team contracts. As you will recall, I had pointed out that awarding MSD an ‘A’ contract when he had explicitly ruled himself out from all Test matches was indefensible on cricketing grounds, and sends absolutely the wrong message,” concluded Raja.

To which Rameez Raja received a severe backlash from Twitterati.
