India are currently playing against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi. The visitors won the toss and opted to field first in front of the jam-packed crowd. The decision proved to be a great one for them as the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed in the very first over. With KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer also gone, the onus was on Shikhar Dhawan to take care of the run-scoring.

Rahul and Iyer both got starts but they threw their wicket away. In the 11th over of the innings, the latter also got out leaving India reeling at 70/3. This is when Pant walked in with a lot of pressure on him. At the same time, Dhawan was struggling on a slow pitch to get going. But it was important for the duo to rotate the strike.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh were bowling extremely well on a sluggish surface and the spinners kept things quiet for a long time.

Pant misjudgement costs Shikhar Dhawan

However, Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan didn’t take any risks and made sure that the run-rate didn’t go below six. The partnership was building up nicely and the latter was also finding his touch slowly. But Pant made a grave mistake in the 15th over which might have cost India a few important runs. Off the fifth ball of the over, the wicketkeeper-batsman tapped the ball with light hands to the leg-side and set off to take a run.

Mahmudullah, the bowler, ran swiftly behind the ball. At the same time, Dhawan and Rishabh Pant sensed a second run and the latter called his partner for a run. However, the Bangladesh skipper was quick to get hold of the ball and delivered a good throw to the keeper. Caught by surprise, Pant, at the last moment, rejected the second run. But Shikhar Dhawan was already half-way down the pitch and though he tried to get back, it was too late.

The replays confirmed that the Indian opener was out of his crease and India were dealt with a huge blow at a crucial moment in the game. Dhawan scored 41 runs off 42 deliveries and was looking good to take on the opposition. Twitterati was livid with Pant’s calling and slammed him while some of them trolled the youngster as well.
