Indian captain Virat Kohli having batted so well all through the day finally played a loose shot on the last ball of the 76th over. Batting on 97, Kohli tried to hit a wide delivery from Adil Rashid it away for a boundary but just managed to edge it to Ben Stokes at slip. The wicket brough debutant Rishabh Pant to the middle, he faced the same bowler in his next. After pushing the first ball to the fielder he just couldn’t let go off the opportunity to hit Rashid out of the park.

The English spinner opted to challenge Pant his go-to ball, the googly, but the Indian whose played a lot of spin growing up read it out of the hand. Pant’s eyes lit up and he didn’t want to miss a scoring opportunity. The 20-year-old danced down the track and swung his bat with full flow. He bagged the ball over the head of the bowler and off she went well over the ropes.

Thus Pant got off the mark in the longest format of the game with a six. He is the first Indian cricketer to open his account with a maximum in Test cricket. Overall the left-hander is the 12th batsman to have done that.

A dynamic batsman known for his big hitting abilities Pant just announced his arrival in Test cricket with a bang! He was brought into this game as a replacement for Dinesh Karthik who seems to have injured his finger in the Lord’s Test and was anyway in line to be axed following a string of poor performances with the bat and behind the wickets as well.

Twitterati just couldn’t control their emotions having watched Pant play such an outrageous shot first up in the whites.

Here are some of the reactions that emerged immediately:
