Soumya Swaminathan is the Indian Chess player who holds the title of Woman Grandmaster from India, She was set to represent the country in the Asian Team Chess Championship 2018 which is going to be held in Hamadan, Iran. But the host country imposed a strange law of following a religious dress code on the players which violated the basic human rights. However, she didn’t like the same and pulled out of the tournament as she has found a support from the former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif.
According to the religious dress code, it will be mandatory for all the players to wear the headscarf or burkha while playing. Soumya found the Iranian law as the direct violation of the basic human rights and decided that pulling out of the tournament was the only way for her to protest her rights. The decision she took is absolutely praiseworthy as it will make the host country think about the same now.
Mohammad Kaif is known to speak his mind always and doesn’t shy away from expressing his opinions. Similarly, he voiced his support for the Champion Chess player of India and came up with a tweet for her in which he hailed her for courageous step and lashed out at the laws in Iran.
“Hats off to Soumya Swaminathan for pulling out of this event in Iran. There should be no scope for religious dress codes to be imposed on Players. A host nation should not be granted permission to host such international events if it fails to consider basic human rights,” his message read.

Twitter praises Kaif for his efforts
Twitterati which has recently been critical towards Mohammad Kaif was impressed after he showed his support towards the 29-year-old. The fans were all praise of him as they felt one needs the courage to express the feelings openly as few went on to say that more people with such kind of thoughts will take the country forward in the near future.
Here’s how Twitterati reacted:
