The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) retained two of their trump cards, Sunil Narine (8.5 crores) and Andre Russell (7 crores). But, they left out their captain Gautam Gambhir who led them to two title victories. The IPL retention policy is currently the talk of the town with all the eight franchises retaining their valuable players for the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Many uncanny decisions were taken in the retention, as most of the expected star players were not retained by their teams. Gambhir is one of those who was omitted by his franchise. He had been a part of the Knight Riders club since 2011, where he was bought for a whopping amount of 11.04 cr rupees in the auction.

A look at the record books and we can realize that he is one of the most consistent players in the IPL history. He is the fourth leading run-scorer in the IPL with 3634 runs at an average of 31.54, having scored 35 half centuries in 148 appearances.

The out of favour Indian opener is currently in good form representing Delhi in domestic cricket. He performed really well in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Bengal where he hammered a century to guide his team to the final.

A few weeks ago, the 36-year-old left-hand batsman disclosed that he was not contacted for the retention. There have been speculated that he will join his home side Delhi Daredevils in the upcoming IPL season.

KKR also didn’t retain some of their key players like Manish Pandey, Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan. They still have another chance with the Right to Match (RTM) card and can hold on to three of their players. As they only retained two players, they have three RTM cards left in their pile

Here is how the fans reacted to Gambhir’s omission on Twitter:
