The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Wednesday, named India’s playing eleven for their opening Test against Australia, starting December 17 at the Adelaide Oval. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, there were loads of questions over who among KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill should be picked as the opening partner for Mayank Agarwal.

In the end, Prithvi Shaw was preferred over Rahul and Gill. Shaw didn’t have a great time in the warm-up games, scoring 0, 19, 40 and 3. But he had impressed a number of pundits after his exploits during the tour of New Zealand earlier this year. In the meantime, the netizens aren’t happy with the fact that the Fazilka-born Gill was left out of the playing eleven.

Gill got scores of 0 and 29 to start with, in the first practice game at the Drummoyne Oval in Sydney. But in the second match, which was a Day-Night affair at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Shubman came into his own as he notched 43 and 65 runs. After he became the Player of the Tournament in the 2018 U19 World Cup, the 21-year-old has come up the ranks quickly.

At the first-class level, the right-hander has smashed 2270 runs in 23 matches at an average of 68.78 with a top score of 268. He boasts of seven centuries and 11 half-centuries in his short career. Gill made his debut for Team India during their 2019 tour of New Zealand and played only two ODIs where he managed only 16 runs. He has found his way into a number of squads.

But somehow, he has had to warm the benches. The Young Turk recently played the third and final ODI against the Aussies at the Manuka Oval in Canberra and scored 33 runs. It remains to be seen when he goes on to make his Test debut.

Earlier, Gill said that he’s yet to play a competitive first-class match under the lights. For the time being, his fans and well-wishers aren’t happy that he didn’t find a spot in India’s playing eleven for the Adelaide Test.
