The wicket at the Holkar Stadium in Indore looked fascinating for the batsmen. After checking out the pitch, Sunil Gavaskar and Michael Clarke at the pre-match pitch analysis wanted to drop off their microphones and pick the bat. Australia also enjoyed batting on the wicket and posted their best score in the series ending the innings on 293/6. When India walked out to bat it was openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane who relished the opportunity to bat on this wicket.

Rohit, in particular, was at his best and when batting on 30 off 28 balls as Kane Richardson ran in to bowl the 3rd ball of the 9th over. He took a couple of steps down the wicket and was pre-meditated to go for the shot. Richardson saw him come down and thus shortened the length of the ball but that was not going to work as the Indian opener was determined to hit that one away.

He pulled the ball, over the deep square leg region, it was hit right out of the middle and the ball just sailed and kept travelling till it crossed over the stadium. As Ravi Shastri would’ve said, ‘It’s huge it’s out of here,’ the ball was lost and the umpires had to get another ball for play to resume. The broadcasters later displayed that the ball had travelled 103 meters in the air before crashing into something.

After the shot, the giant screen at the stadium displayed “Into the orbit” amidst all that the camera panned to the Indian coach Shastri who had a regular look on his face as if he wasn’t impressed.

This is the kind of wicket Rohit enjoys batting on where the ball is coming onto the bat nicely, the bounce is true and there is no movement whatsoever. He has already hit four sixes in his innings and scored his fastest half century off 42 balls.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to the humongous six Rohit hit:
