The much-awaited auction of 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off in style as the franchises splurged hefty amount from their purse on many prominent players. Chris Morris and Pat Cummins grabbed the headlines after Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders snapped their services for 10 crores and 15.5 crores respectively. Another player who garnered much attention was Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was sold to Mumbai Indians for 8 crores INR.
The grandeur of IPL was reflected by many franchises splurging their purse on many unexpected players. One such player, who initiated a surprising bidding war was Piyush Chawla. The 30-year-old had set his base price as 1 crore INR. However, in a move which was surprising for many fans, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab tussled to acquire the services of the leg-break bowler.
The bidding war started from 1 crore INR and notched up to 1.50 crore INR until Chennai Super Kings also threw their hat into the contest. The Yellow brigade raged a bidding war with Kings XI Punjab until the price rocketed up to 6.75 crores INR. Chennai Super Kings eventually acquired the services of Chawla for an astounding sum of 6.75 crores INR.
Chennai Super Kings already have Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir in their squad
Many fans were taken aback by this move of Chennai Super Kings. With Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma and Imran Tahir in their arsenal, not many people would have anticipated that the Dhoni-led side would show interest in snapping up another spinner in their squad. CSK also have Mitchell Santner and Ravindra Jadeja to provide services in the spin-bowling department. After making his debut for India in 2007, Chawla played 25 ODIs for India and scalped 32 wickets including two four-wicket hauls.
The bowling all-rounder has had an illustrious IPL career while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders. He has contributed usefully in the two IPL victories for the Knight Riders and he has also etched his name into the record books by smashing winning runs in the 2014 version of IPL. In 157 IPL matches, the leg-spinner has 150 scalps to his name while playing for Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders. Chennai Super Kings will be the third side for which Chawla will don the jersey in the Indian Premier League.
