The inaugural edition of the T20 Mumbai League is being surrounded by a plethora of controversies, something which no one expected. The tournament has reached its business end with Mumbai North East franchise Triumph Knights reaching the final in a closely-fought contest on Monday against Sobo Super Sonics.
But the unfortunate news that has hit the shores of this league is that the umpires have reported nine bowlers for a suspect action. The authorities have already taken note of the situation and currently scrutinizing the issue. A Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) office-bearer told the media that respective teams have been informed about the same.
The MCA also considered the modalities to be completed before convening a Special General Meeting in mid-April, mainly to give effect to the Justice Lodha Reforms. Although this is not the right kind of response MCA expected for their biggest event of the year, they are keen to resolve all the issues before the SGM.
One of the nine bowlers is a former first-class cricketer
Although the names of all the bowlers are yet to come out, there are two names that were confirmed. One of them is Rajesh Pawar, who previously played a lot of first-class cricket for Mumbai, Baroda, and Andhra Pradesh. He has picked up over 200 FC wickets in his illustrious career and was also named in the 30-man probable list for the 2007 Indian World Cup Squad.
Another cricketer who is under the scanner right now is Akhtar Shaikh, who is representing the North Mumbai Panthers in the ongoing league. But the reason why he was booked is slightly different. Akhtar played in a Twenty20 league in Rajasthan, by the name of Wasim Khan. Whereas only MCA registered players are eligible to play in the league.
The MCA currently has a job in hand to get all these issues resolved to ensure there will be a second edition of the league. Whilst some big players like Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane etc. have taken part in the tournament, the controversies would still remain the main headlines.
