Watching a batsman winning it for his team by whacking a six off the final ball is always special for the supporters of the chasing side. Indian fans have a particular connection with such a climax for a long, long time now, and the memory is not sweet as former Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad had won it for his side by hitting Chetan Sharma for a last-ball six in Sharjah. But on Wednesday, the Indian fans were in for a pleasant feeling as Rohit Sharma did a Miandad to see the Men in Blue clinch their first-ever T20I series in New Zealand.

The third game of the series that India were leading 2-0 went down to the wire. Having won the toss and sent India to bat first, Kane Williamson’s side restricted the visitors for 179 for 5 in 20 overs. The Black Caps needed just two runs from the last four balls with Williamson batting on 95 in just 47 balls.

But an ever-reliable Mohammed Shami dismissed Williamson and experienced Ross Taylor in two balls to see NZ ending up at 179 for 6, forcing the game into the super over.

India come back strongly in super over after Bumrah concedes 17

In the super over, Williamson belted Jasprit Bumrah for a six and four to take his team to 17 runs, setting India a target of 18 off six. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started off slowly and with 10 needed off the last two balls, the home team looked the favourites. But Rohit Sharma, who slammed 65 in 40 balls in the main game after a couple of failures, waited for the climax and tonked two maximums to give India a famous win.

As did millions of supporters of the blue brigade, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan was also ecstatic. He took to Twitter to celebrate and congratulated India for their maiden T20I series win in New Zealand. He called Rohit’s hitting “UNBELIEVABLE”. For Rohit, it was a particularly happy moment as last year, he had come very close to win a T20I series in New Zealand as the captain but lost the deciding game very closely — by four runs.
