The dynamics of cricket as we know it changed in 2008. The inaugural IPL auction saw audacious sums of money thrown at cricketers who were auctioned at the event. Since then, an auction has taken place every year with new players attempting to stake their claim and attain the spotlight. While the big bucks showered during the auction cauldron has increased each calendar year, the Indian Premier League sends out a message. The message read “The IPL is here to stay”. It is resounding. It is loud and clear as day.

However, when the atrocious sums of money spent, an ROI (Return on investment) is always looked at. And, in a few cases, this return on investment is either a hit or a miss. Recently, Idealo, a consumer affairs research company based in, Berlin, Germany did a detailed analysis on the amount of money paid to each player against the contribution they make to the team. According to them, the whole idea to analyze the relationship between player performance and their valuation.

While the amounts are sky-high, Idealo has just crowned the most valuable player in the IPL. As reported by them, “The top Indian cricketers earn about Rs. 1,00,00,000 annually from their BCCI central contracts. A same amount of time in IPL can fetch 100 times more for a player like Yuvraj Singh, who fetched the highest price of Rs. 14,00,00,000 in 2014’s auction.

“The IPL contracts are for a single season, but the franchises can retain players up to three seasons. The tournament dictates each team to field seven Indian players in starting XI. Therefore, each franchise needs to hire about 14 Indian players to build their squads thereby benefiting 100 – 110 Indian players. “

They began their list with batsmen who have scored over 2000 runs and bowlers with at least 75 wickets. According to their list, Shaun Marsh, Pragyan Ojha and Dwayne Bravo feature on the list as the top batsman, bowler, and all-rounder.
