The eighth day of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy witnessed some high-scoring matches as 12 teams battled to get one step closer to the knockout stage. Thankfully, none of the games today were washed out by the rain gods, which was the case in the last few days. It was the game between Goa and Mumbai which went all down to the wire and asked both the teams to play their best to win.
The Group C encounter between Andra and Gujarat turned out to be a one-way affair as Andra batters made it look easier than it actually was. Batting first, Gujarat team posted a respectable total on the board, on the back of quickfire fifty by Rujul Bhatt. In reply, Srikar Bharat and Ashwin Hebbar played some scintillating shots along the ground which eventually helped them to put up a partnership of 192 for the first wicket. Ashwin got unlucky as he got out for one short of the three-figure mark.
The middle-order batsman Saurabh Tiwary has been in prime form as he is able to play almost every delivery to his strengths. Scoring 107 off 105 deliveries, Tiwary helped his side post 288 runs on the board. However, his superlative innings went in vain as almost every other batsman from Chhatisgarh scored 50 plus runs and helped their side register their fourth win.
After two forgettable matches for the opener Swapnil Asnodkar, he finally found his feet moving and gave his team a decent start. Scoring 56 off 62 balls, with contribution from the lower middle-order, Goa managed to put up 266 runs on the board. In reply, Mumbai yet again showed the strength of their middle-order with the trio, Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav, and Aditya Tare scoring 50 plus scores. This eventually helped Mumbai occupy the second spot in the Group C.
The encounter between MP and Rajasthan had some cracking moments and also involved firepower, but in the end, it was the Rajasthan team which held their nerves and managed to upstage MP. Batting first, MP scored 241 runs with few cameos from the skipper Harpreet Singh and Anand Bais. In reply, the number-three batsman Aditya Garhwal made his intentions clear right at the start and went on to score run-a-ball 108 runs.
Group D saw some high-scoring matches as the Hyderabad team managed to pull off a one-way affair with a stupendous century from Rohit Rayudu. He scored run-a-ball 130 runs laced with 11 boundaries and 3 sixes. The other game was played between Saurashtra and Services which again turned out to be a one-sided encounter. Batting first, the wickets kept tumbling for Services as they, were bowled out for just 176 runs. In reply, Saurashtra chased the score quite comfortably.
