On the sixth day of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017-18, a total of six teams battled to go up their respective groups. Punjab vs Baroda, Assam vs Railways and Haryana vs Karnataka were the three contests scheduled for the day. However, the game between Haryana and Karnataka at the Alur Cricket Stadium was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to wet outfield.

Yuvraj Singh- The Lone Survivor

The Group A encounter between Punjab and Baroda was reduced to 21 overs per side due to the wet outfield. Punjab skipper Yuvraj Singh won the toss and decided to bowl first on the damp wicket. It was believed that the track will offer a bit for the fast bowlers at the start, and considering the conditions, Punjab played an extra seamer. The top three batters from Baroda found it really difficult to get going as they lost three wickets in quick succession leaving skipper Deepak Hooda with a lot to do. A partnership between Hooda and star with bat Vishnu Solanki helped them to post 167 runs on the board.

In reply, the Punjab top-order emulated the opposition. Once again it was the skipper Yuvraj who turned out to be the mainstay with the bat. He scored 51 runs off just 36 balls at an astonishing strike rate of 141.67. His innings was laced with 7 boundaries and a beautiful six. However, Yuvraj was short of a partner which eventually pushed them down to a 25-run loss.

The next game between Railways and Assam ended up being a one-way affair in favour of Railways, who registered their second win. Batting first, Railways were bowled out for a mere score of 161 runs. Jitumoni and Arup picked three wickets each, and that helped Assam to a strong position. However, the wicket wasn’t an easy one to bat on and Assam batsmen found it really difficult to get going. Chasing a small target, all they needed was one good partnership, but wickets kept tumbling which eventually Assam register all-important four points.
