The Indian squad for the upcoming T20 triangular series against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has recently been announced. While the likes of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have been rested, Vijay Shankar and Washington Sundar have been included owing to their stupendous run of form in the ongoing domestic season. Shankar, the Tamil Nadu limited-overs skipper, received his maiden call in the team in the shortest format.

Most recently, Kohli mentioned that the team management wants to groom Shankar as a backup of Hardik Pandya. Being an all-rounder Pandya has grown leaps and bounds as his career has progressed. Shankar might need to fill his shoes, however, it won’t be an easy task for the 27-year old to match the prowess of the Baroda all-rounder and break into the team.

Shankar- India’s future

He recently spoke to the media about this endeavours with the national team. “I never compare myself with anyone and personally I don’t believe in that. Every cricketer is special in his own way. As a cricketer, I should try to better myself in every match. I’m excited to be part of the T20 side and I hope to express myself as and when I get an opportunity,” Shankar was quoted as saying by Times of India.

The cricketer also talked about his efforts towards developing big-hitting abilities. “I have focussed more on ball-striking abilities. I worked on certain drills with my coach Balaji to increase my hitting range. I’m glad that I have been amongst runs in the domestic competition in the shorter formats recently which gives me a lot of confidence heading into this series,” he added.

Hardik Pandya hasn’t had impressive outings in the recently concluded ODI and T20I series against South Africa. Shankar might be drafted in the playing eleven, provided Pandya doesn’t find his touch back after an abysmal tour of the Rainbow nation. The opening game of the series will be played on March 6 between India and Sri Lanka at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
