Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma: The Batman-Superman duo of Indian cricket
Team India is lucky to have the top 2 batsmen in ODIs playing for them and it is the 'Batman-Superman' duo.
They may not have superpowers in real life but with a bat in hand, they are magical on a cricket field. You can admire them, love them or hate them but you definitely cannot deny their brilliance. Watching them bat together is just like watching a Justice League movie where two of the world’s biggest superheroes fight and destroy the opposition together.
Their enemies can only wonder and are awestruck by their sheer brilliance. If there were two batsmen best suited to carry Tendulkar’s legacy they are definitely Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as once mentioned by the great master blaster himself. The most suited lines to describe Virat are from a Batman movie-“If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal then you become something else entirely.”
Like Batman Kohli is not a gifted human. He doesn’t have the elegance or talent of Rohit but with sheer determination and hard work has transformed himself into an unstoppable force. He is not a Tendulkar but a human with immense self-belief, a habit of learning from his mistakes and all that backed by persistent hard work. In only a decade after he first made an appearance in the International arena, he has established himself as one of the greatest batsmen to have played the game.
He is already the fastest batsman to reach the 10000-run landmark in ODIs and with age and time on his side looks the most promising cricketer to break Sachin Tendulkar’s records of 18426 ODI runs and with 38 ODI centuries, he is already nearing the legends tally of 49 ODI centuries. It’s hard to imagine the number of records Virat will break by the day he decides to hang his boots.
Rohit the Superman
Rohit Sharma was touted as God’s gift to cricket after Sachin Tendulkar. Both being Mumbaikars their extraordinary stroke-making ability only added to the notion. Rohit may not have fulfilled the prophecy in the longer version of the game yet but is definitely on the right way in ODI cricket. Just like Superman Rohit looks a god gifted cricketer with his superpowers being his extraordinary stroke-making abilities, a wide range of shots and the ample time to play them all with exquisite elegance.
When in flow he is a treat to watch and makes batting looks an effortlessly easy job. He is the only batsman with three double hundreds and definitely looks to add some more doubles to his name in the coming years. The only thing that was missing from his game was consistency and he has overcome that in the past few years.
In fact, as of October 2018, Rohit has scored at least one century in the last 9 ODI series he has played. Also out of his 21 ODI centuries, 11 have come since the start of 2017 which further demonstrates his increasing consistency while opening the batting for the Men in Blue.
India is lucky to have the top 2 batsmen in ODIs playing for them and this ‘Batman-Superman’ duo will be key to India’s success in the upcoming 2019 World Cup. Also with Rohit being selected back in the Test squad for the tour down under, fans of Indian cricket will hope the duo replicates their limited-overs partnership and success in the longer version of the game as well. And with the amount of talent, hard work and class between them nothing seems impossible.
