Former Australian great and captain Ian Chappell has also joined the long-standing debate of the best batsman. Chappell believes that the Indian skipper, Virat Kohli possesses all the abilities to overhaul the likes of Viv Richards, AB de Villiers and Sachin Tendulkar and end his career as the ‘Sir Donald Bradman of ODI Cricket’. His comments come a few days after Kohli led the Indian team to a historic double, winning the Test series and a bilateral ODI series on the same tour, for the first time in the history.

Back in 2008 when Kohli made his debut, he was seen as a bright prospect capable of achieving the highest laurels in International cricket and he hasn’t disappointed anyone in his career so far. His progress in white ball cricket has been remarkable as the graph has only gone upwards ever since his debut and at the moment the Indian stalwart has amassed 10385 runs in 211 ODI innings at an impressive average of 59.68 which happens to be the highest among the active cricketers playing ODIs.

Kohli reminds of Richards

“Kohli reminds me of Richards in his approach to ODI batting; he eschews fancy shots and relies on a wide range of traditional strokes … As the only one of this quartet still playing ODIs, Kohli already heads some important statistical categories,” he wrote in his column in ESPNCricinfo.

“If he were to continue at his current rate – an unlikely outcome as he ages – he would pass Tendulkar’s aggregate with more than one hundred innings to spare and nearly 20 centuries in advance of the Little Master.

“If he even came close to achieving these amazing feats, there could be no argument: Kohli would be the Sir Donald Bradman of ODI batsmen.”

While it has to be noted that the 30-year-old already has 64 international centuries to his name of which 39 are in ODIs, Kohli is only behind the Indian legend, Tendulkar’s 100 international and 49 ODI centuries respectively.
