Man of the match and newly crowned hero of Indian cricket Virat Kohli celebrated India’s win over Australia in true sportsman gladiator style. Upon reaching the team hotel, Kohli opened up a bottle of the finest champagne, an act that kick-started a much-needed celebration with the Indian cricket team. The 27-year old was seen spraying the champagne with Indian teammates Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma and Harbhajan Singh. Cakes too made their way towards the Indian vice-captain as he became the centre of attention for the evening’s festivities.
From the outset, this match was a special one for many reasons. Firstly, it was a quarterfinal of sorts with both sides needing a win to ensure their progress to the semi-final. Secondly, and more importantly, an Indian win would mark the end of an illustrious international career of Aussie all-rounder Shane Watson.
The Mohali wicket has always been witness to some of the highest-scoring matches and the best thrillers in both international cricket and the Indian Premier League. Therefore, Australia won the psychological battle by winning the toss and opting to bat first, setting a stiff target of 162.
All hope of an Indian win seemed distant when the Indians lost the wicket of Yuvraj Singh. Moreover, they were chasing 96 runs in 10 overs. However, little did the Aussies know what Kohli was completely capable of. Kohli took charge, as he has frequently done in the recent past, smashing a 51-ball 82 not out, studded with two sixes and nine fours.
The winning runs were scored by Dhoni, who heaved the first ball of the 20th over, a full toss served by James Faulkner, at long-on for a four. But for the most part, the skipper watched Kohli’s glorious innings from the non-striker’s end.
Thus, one would suggest that the celebration with the champagne was one certainly appropriate for the occasion.
