India Women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj praised Virat Kohli and said that it is simply outstanding how he focusses on staying fit throughout the year. Mithali and her teammates were rewarded for their impressive show at the world cup in England, earlier this year. India ended runners-up after losing to England in the finals at Lord’s. The popularity of women’s cricket in India hit a new high post their campaign.

The Indian skipper also said that it is a positive thing to see people get their dues, as every athlete work hard to bring laurels to their respective country. Mithali will be penning her autobiography and it will release at the end of next year.

“It feels great that all of them are getting their due, and that people are finally recognising them,” the 34-year-old said at the CNN-News18 Indian of the Year 2017.

On trolls

Regarding the online trolls which she counters on a daily basis, the cricketer said that it is not really worth her time. “I’ve come so far playing cricket in an era where it was not really appreciated, and responding to trolls is not really worth my time.

On her idol

On being asked about her idol, she said Virat Kohli inspires her. “There are so many people who inspire me every day, not one person. But if I do have to name someone, it’s got to be Virat Kohli, for bringing the focus on fitness. Be it the men or women, everyone wants to be the best in international cricket,” Raj said.

On fitness

The right-handed batter had earlier stressed on the importance of fitness. “The key is fitness. My fitness routine has changed with age. As a young kid, I was into running. Later, I started strength training. Now that I’m 34, it’s all about maintaining a good fitness level with proper recovery and rest periods. From the start, I’ve wanted to play for India for as long as I can. Sportspersons have a short career span. I’ve seen sportspersons retiring early, and then regretting it. I didn’t want to be like that.” she said.
