Kane Williamson has garnered rave review for his leadership skill after leading his side flawlessly to the semi-final of the ICC World T20 2016 held in India. The young skipper was entrusted the responsibility after senior pro Brendon McCullum bid adieu to international cricket just few months prior to the all-important tournament.

But, Williamson displayed excellent tactical skills. He looked to be seamlessly carrying forward McCullum’s legacy. “It was like a transition. It still is,” Williamson told iplt20.com. “The work that Brendon did with the side was incredible. I was learning from him as well and I was very fortunate to be able to do so.

“It was certainly a different kind of experience. To lead a side in a World Cup, the guys gelled well and the performances were good as well. Every time you come to India, you learn so much. There was a lot of planning to be done and that certainly helped me as a player.”

Williamson has not only matured as a leader but is widely considered as one of the best batsmen playing international cricket right now along with Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Joe Root.

Williamson praised India’s Test captain and acknowledged that their style of play is quite similar. “He’s certainly a special player,” he said. “He isn’t a bully batsman, which some people are in T20 cricket. I’m not a bully batsman either, so you are trying to work out a way. T20 cricket is all about how you score at a good rate and how he does is up to the player. Whether it’s by hitting sixes or by hitting twos, you are achieving what’s needed.”

“To me it’s the same. A lot of us don’t have the luxury of that extreme power game. The fundamentals of the game remain the same no matter what format you play. If you are in order, then it’s much easier to adapt. If you are in control of your game, then making those adjustments become a little more easier. It’s a challenge. The best players are the one who learn very quickly,” he concluded.
