Indian captain Virat Kohli is just 11 centuries short of becoming the world’s topmost ton-gatherer in the ODIs and with his side set to play a whole lot of 50-over games in the coming months, including the World Cup, it is very likely that the ace batsman will scale the peak in a foreseeable time.

The belief that Virat Kohli will smash major records of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar (he has already started breaking some) is harboured by millions of fans and several former players and now former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas has also reiterated the same.

Kohli recently scored his 39th ODI century which took his tally of international tons to 64, placing him in the third position in the all-time list after Tendulkar (100) and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting (76). Tendulkar has 51 centuries in Tests and 49 in ODIs. Abbas said that 30-year-old Kohli will break all records of Tendulkar though he also advised the experts to keep into consideration the era, conditions and opposition that the batsman plays.

Speaking on GTV’s Gsports show, the 71-year-old Abbas said, “I think at the moment Virat is the best. He will break all the records.”
“Not only Virat, the Indian team has other top batsmen too. If you look at Rohit Sharma, you are just delighted to watch his strokes. One can only appreciate the beauty of his strokes. The variety of strokes in possession of Indian batsmen counts a lot,” Abbas, one of the brightest batsmen in the 1970s and 1980s, said.

He said confidence comes to the batsman when he has strokes and knows ways to stay at the wicket. He said they don’t come easily and requires a lot of time and hard work.

Abbas, who averaged above 44 in both Tests and ODIs, also said that top Pakistani batsmen of this generation Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq were yet to attain similar standards. “They have not reached that standard that I can feel proud of. They haven’t come up to world standards as yet.”
