The news that has been doing the rounds in recent days is that Indian skipper and batting legend Virat Kohli had asked for a three-match Test series to be played to decide the winner of the World Test Championship (WTC).

And now, Indian spin bowling great Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up on this topic. The Tamil Nadu spinner stated that he finds the talk surrounding Kohli asking for 3 Test matches to be played as a ridiculous one.

Ashwin revealed that Michael Atherton had asked Kohli as to whether anything different could be done in the World Test Championship (WTC). And, it was only then that Kohli had stated that 3 Test matches can be played to decide the winner where a team can adapt and come back from different situations. Ashwin firmly stated that Kohli did not demand anything.

“I happened to hear people saying that Virat Kohli asked for three Tests to be played for the WTC Final but it is ridiculous. After the match got over, Michael Atherton had asked what could be done differently in the WTC. Virat replied in a particular context that if three matches are played, then adaptability and come back for a team are possible. Kohli did not demand anything,” said Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

Ravichandran Ashwin further stated that a billion Indians were looking forward to some good news on the cricket field after the lockdown, but India could not manage to emerge triumphant in the WTC. Ashwin concluded by stating that he hopes that India wins another ICC tournament.

“When we lose a final, fans would be disappointed. Perhaps, billion Indians were looking forward to good news after lockdown and stuff. But it didn’t happen. Fingers crossed. Just hoping we win some other ICC tournament,” concluded Ashwin.

India’s next assignment in Test cricket is a highly challenging one. The Indian Test side will take on England in a five-match Test series that will start on 4th August 2021.
