Indian captain Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the remainder of the 3rd Test against Australia in Ranchi after the flamboyant Delhi lad injured his right shoulder while fielding in the opening day of the 3rd Test. It will be a big blow to the hosts considering the fact that Kohli won’t be able to bat in any of the innings in the 3rd Test. It will effectively mean India will be batting without their No.1 batsman in both the innings.

Ravindra Jadeja bowled a delivery on the middle and leg and much like Steve Smith, his partner Handscomb came dancing down the track to whip Jadeja towards the mid-wicket boundary. Kohli gave a spirited chase and saved it inches ahead of the boundary ropes. But while diving he fell terribly on his right shoulder and looked in ominous pain. He left the field along with the physio but no one predicted the injury would rule him out from taking any further part in the remainder of the Test.

The MRI scan on his right shoulder should a tear which is likely to rule him out of the Final test in Dharmasala as well. Meanwhile, Australia played brilliantly on the opening day and finished the 1st day’s play in a commanding position. Captain Steve Smith continued his dream run and smashed his 19th Test century and stitched together a valuable unbroken partnership with comeback man Glenn Maxwell for the 5th wicket.

While Smith remained unbeaten on 117, Maxwell went on to notch up his maiden Test fifty and looked well set for much more on the 2nd day. He remained unbeaten on 82 and will look to carry on from where he left on the opening day. Umesh Yadav was the wrecker-in-chief for the hosts who bagged a couple of wickets, while Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bagged a wicket each.

Update (9:58 PM – 16 Mar 2017) : BCCI has confirmed that Virat Kohli hasn’t been ruled out as yet.
