Over the past year and a half, the Indian cricket team has had a very hectic schedule with back to back series being played. With the two-month long Indian Premier League approaching, the team management decided to rest some of its senior players for the on-going tri-series to manage their workload. Along with former captain MS Dhoni, current captain Virat Kohli has also been rested from the Nidahas Trophy, among others.

A much-needed break for Kohli

This was a much-needed break for Kohli who has constantly been playing cricket since England’s tour of India in late 2016. The 29-year-old will be seen playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL beginning on April 7. RCB play their first game of the season against KKR in Kolkata on April 8. In a recent interaction with the media, Kohli emphasized the importance of rest for a cricketer, and of managing workload.

“Physically I had a few niggles, I am just getting over those. The workload has started to disagree (taking a toll) with me a little bit. I have to be very careful about how I go forward with my body, my mind, my cricket,” Kohli said on the sidelines of a promotional event for noted watch brand Tissot.

Following India’s matches but not watching them

He also revealed that although he keeps a track of what is happening in the games, he doesn’t watch them live because he is enjoying every moment of his free time.

“Times like these are very-very important going ahead. I am totally enjoying it. I do not even have an inch of me missing out on anything because my body really needed this. Although I am keeping a track of the games, I do not watch matches right now and feel like I want to be on the field because I have started to listen to my body,” he added.
