Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a new head coach of the Indian team. They advertised for the role and received six applications, including that of current coach Anil Kumble. But Indian skipper Virat Kohli will not be able to select the new coach. Vinod Rai, chairman of Committee of Administrators (CoA) made it clear that the final call will be taken by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
The CAC comprises of three former Indian cricketers – Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly. Among the six applicants, Virender Sehwag and Tom Moody are considered as favourites to bag the job. The former Indian opening batsman is the Director of Cricket Affairs (DCA) of the Indian Premier League team (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab. Another IPL coach Moody took Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden IPL title in 2016.
According to CoA, the 28-year-old skipper can give his preferences, but he cannot, under any circumstances, force the CAC to select a coach of his choice. “Kohli can say whatever he wants but he won’t get his choice of coach until the advisory panel agrees to it. He doesn’t have the veto power to decide the new coach. He only has the power to select the playing XI. This does not mean that he can’t give his preferences. He can spell out his choice of candidate but the final call will be taken by the CAC,” said a top BCCI official while speaking to TOI.
Indian coach v/s Overseas coach
According to reports, Kohli wants Virender Sehwag to be the new head coach of the Indian team. But considering Moody‘s record, he cannot be ruled out. “Indian coaches are good but foreign coaches actually work without any biases,” said the source. The veto power lies with the three legends. It will be interesting to see what decision they take.
