Ahead of the start of the 4th and final Test between India and South Africa, the BCCI honoured Virender Sehwag for his contribution to the game. The iconic opener bid adieu to international cricket and Indian Premier League in October this year. However, he will continue to play in Ranji Trophy for Haryana until the end of the season. He was presented with a silver plaque commemorating his achievements.

Viru received a wonderful memento from BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur. Players from both India and South African teams were also present on the ground during the felicitation ceremony. He shook hands with players from both teams and the respect for the attacking opener was evident. His mother Krishna Sehwag, wife Aarti, sons Aryavir and Vedant were also present.

“I want to thank my father for allowing me to play the game of cricket and give me freedom to do whatever I wanted to. All my coaches, especially AN Sharma for making me the cricketer I am,” Viru said.

He continued, “I want to thank my first captain Ajay Jadeja and other captains Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble. I want to thank Sachin Tendulkar. I would like to thank all my fans for standing by me in my good and bad times.”

He also mentioned about the contribution of the physios and trainers during his 14-year long career. In the end, he thanked the fans for “making him Sehwag”. The two ends of the Feroz Shah Kotla were named 319 and 309 in honour of his triple tons in Test cricket.
