Team India middle order batsman Karun Nair created history when he became the second Indian batsman to score a triple century in Test cricket. The first was legendary Virender Sehwag. He brought up an emphatic triple ton in the final Test against England at Chennai. Resuming the 4th day on 71, Nair had a herculean rise to the top scoring a marathon triple ton.
Nair brought up his century early in the first session of play. After reaching the landmark, he stepped on the accelerator to up the ante. In no time, he was seen crossing the 200-run mark. Soon, he found himself in a position to score a triple ton and skipper Virat Kohli delayed the declaration for Karun Nair to reach the coveted milestone.
Wishes came in flogging from all corners for the young Karnataka batsman. He became only the second Indian to score a triple ton after Sehwag. He had the distinction of doing it twice. He hit his first triple ton against Pakistan in 2004 at Multan. He then scored his second triple ton against South Africa at the same Chennai venue where Nair reached his triple century.
Sehwag was quick to appreciate the knock by Karun Nair. He took to social media and welcomed Karun to the elite 300 club. In a post-match video in the talk show, Sehwag was also seen giving a special video message to the Karnataka batsman.
In the video, he quoted, “Welcome to 300 club. Welcome Karun Nair. You played very well. It was fun watching you become the second person to score a triple century (for India). I was the one ruling Chennai till now, now even you rule the place,” said Virender Sehwag.
Nair became the youngest Indian batsman to score a Test triple as he did so aged 25 years and 13 days.
