Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag is currently gearing up for the upcoming edition of the IPL. Sehwag is the Director of Cricketing Operations of the Kings XI Punjab, who are on a recruiting spree at the moment. Sehwag, however, is keeping a close eye on the developments of the Indian team as well. At a recent event, Sehwag spoke at length about the prospects of the Indian team for the 2019 edition of the World Cup.

He went back in the timeline to recall how his first World Cup, the 2003 edition, was made a memorable one by the guidance of senior players like Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. Virender Sehwag believes that the Indian team will have similar guidance from MS Dhoni in the 2019 World Cup. Sehwag singled out Dhoni as a key player for India in the coveted event.

“As a youngster, I played my first World Cup 2003 with Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble and they were helping me out. These youngsters have a very good senior player like Dhoni who can teach and guide them on how to prepare themselves for the 2019 World Cup,” Virender Sehwag quoted.

Recalling the plans of 2011 WC

Virender Sehwag continued speaking on the same lines and recalled how the World Cup 2011 had fared out for the Indian cricket team. The team had won the World Cup under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Sehwag revealed that the team discussions were clear.

They all wanted to treat every game in the World Cup to be a knockout game and that is how they went ahead with their plans. And as the history books validate, the Indian team lost just one match in the tournament, a league game fixture against South Africa.

“Two years before the event, we had a team meeting where we decided that we will treat every game at the 2011 World Cup as a knock out game. If we lose, we are out of the World Cup. We won all the matches in the run up to the finals and that’s how we prepared ourselves,” Sehwag revealed.
