It’s the season for predictions again. As India inch closer to yet another Test series in Australia featuring four games, former cricketer VVS Laxman feels the visitors will end up on the winning side. If Virat Kohli’s men succeed in winning the Test series, it will be historic since the Asian powerhouse has never won a Test series in Australia in their seven-decade rivalry.
Experts are predicting an Indian win in the longer format this time since the hosts, currently ranked fifth in the International Cricket Council’s list of Test-playing nations, are without two of their premier performers Steve Smith and David Warner who are serving a year-long ban. The last time India won a Test match in Australia was in the 2007-08 series while their best results Down Under so far have been three drawn series – in 1980-81, 1985-86 and 2003-04.
India have quality players to achieve it
Laxman, who recently launched his autobiography ‘281 & Beyond’ co-authored with senior cricket writer R Kaushik, said in an interview with Sports Tak: “There will be no possibilities of drawing as its difficult to make a draw in Australian conditions. India will not get an opportunity to make it happen not because Steven Smith and David Warner is not playing in the Australian team. India has quality players to achieve it. Lets hope, they fulfil my prediction as because India has talent, potential and they should play according to it.”
The 44-year-old former Hyderabad batsman, whose autobiography title ‘281’ is given after the epic double century he hit against the Australians in the famous Test in Kolkata in 2001, has been one of India’s most prolific scorers against the Kangaroos. He has three four hundreds on the Australian soil in three tours besides two double tons at home.
India ranked No.1 in Tests, are a better bowling unit in overseas tours now but their batting hasn’t clicked as per the expectations barring captain Kohli in the longer format abroad and that has hurt the team’s chances of winning away series. India embarked on two major overseas tours this year – of South Africa and England but lost them 1-2 and 1-4, respectively, with only Kohli being the most consistent scorer.
